Still Under Certain Aspects of Law?

I’m in an ongoing discussion with someone regarding law and he has asked me to ask you the question… Didn’t Jesus say He didn’t come to abolish the law? and so he feels that it isn’t. Was talking to another friend who feel we are still under all civil law because of living on planet earth. Someone else has said that when Paul said we were free from law, he didn’t specify that it excluded certain ones that we are still under. So there is my question.

I sure remember these arguments about the different “aspects” of law (moral, civil, ceremonial). I can tell you this much, it takes a legal mind to turn Jesus’ comments around so that the same old basic premise of living under law is somehow shown to be still valid in Christ. This is the realm of the fleshly mind! He came to FULFILL the law … which is actually what Jesus said:

I did not come to abolish the Law but to fulfill it.

Not surprisingly, Paul said the same thing:

Do we then nullify the law through faith? May it never be! No, we establish the law.” Romans 3:31

Once again, only through forcing fleshly logic can it be considered that Paul was leaving room for the law in the new creation by these words. For through faith the law is seen for WHERE it has dominance. It is through faith that we understand how it works and how it brings about its condemnation. However, law has no place on the other side, where Christ has been raised. Christ is the fulfillment.

Under civil law? Even in this we have been removed. They are not our laws, for we are strangers, aliens in this world. Our “submission” to them is merely in form, because love already fulfills the requirements of law.

“They are not our laws, for we are strangers, aliens in this world.”  Yes, and yes!  This is so REAL in our lives and freedom in Christ!

And at one time, this reality seemed so foreign to me. His grace has brought the real to light! :)

We only think we can't understand Christ because of a lack of knowledge, and we only assume another can understand because he knows more than we do!   source
