Why does Romans 3:31 say that faith establishes law?
Submitted by theshovelHello, my dear brother, ... and everyone else, too!! :)
Do we then nullify the Law through faith? May it never be! On the contrary, we establish the Law. Romans 3:31
It is amazing how well the legalist mind has entrenched itself in the very words Paul wrote to destroy its logic!! I know exactly what you feel when you read this. There is that uneasiness that makes us call out, "Why did Paul have to write it like this?" The simple fact is that our language has evolved over the years in an attempt to change the original impact and meaning.
Remember that Jesus did not come to do away with the Law ... as if there was a problem with it ... but He came to FULFILL it! And that is exactly what He did when He died on the cross and rose again. If it is fulfilled, then there is nothing left undone in regards to it. Are you following me? If it is really fulfilled, then how much is left for you to fulfill? But this is just the beginning.
You see how he speaks of faith? He asks if it nullifies the Law. Does our faith in Christ make the law void? Consider carefully how often we have suggested something along those lines in our attempt to draw the line between law and grace. But the line is not made by our carefully constructed division. It was made in Christ when He fulfilled it!! Watch how easily you will get pulled from the reality of the good news message when the legalist mind challenges you in this. The fantastic reality is that we don't have to go any farther than to Christ in His finished work.
Do we have to nullify (or void out) the law? Are we really put in the position of having to defend our "fragile" concept of grace? Or is the freedom of Christ so powerful that it is what defines reality? Obviously, the latter is true. :) The fact is that the Law cannot even be understood apart from the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. Do you catch the impact of that? We have been given the mind of Christ ... we have been made to KNOW GOD!! God was not understood by man through the Law. Oh, yeah ... things ABOUT God, but not God Himself. For the natural mind CANNOT understand the actual stuff of the Spirit of God. CANNOT!!!
So, then, where does that put us? Faith rules out boasting (Romans 3:27) ... right? How does it do so? Simple ...faith is not something that can be considered a WORK of man. Faith is miraculous, for the fact that we have believed in Christ has declared that we could not do ANYTHING to save ourselves in any way. And that is very UN-natural ... don't you think?
For we maintain that a man is justified by faith APART from works of the LAW. Romans 3:28
And the far reaching implications of this had Paul describe how God is not only God of the Jews, but also God of the Gentiles (that's us). This is important. If He had any intention of using the law in any sense to gain access to Him, then it would have been through forming us after the Jews (proselytes). But here is the fantastic news. It had NOTHING to do with the Law at all. The law was ADDED for a reason, but it was NOT to make a way to get to God!!!!! This is the basic fallacy in ALL attempts to use something that we can do to get us closer to God. The law has revealed man's inability to do ANYTHING of God! And with all the specific rules He gave He embedded that truth over and over and over and over again. But do we get it? Have we figured it out by all our attempts to do it? We keep failing and trying again ... failing and trying another way ... etc.
And here it is!! The very reality that TRULY REVEALS the righteousness of God is FAITH (the law reveals the sin). The very thing that has shown that there is no difference between those who were given the set of commands and those who couldn't care less is FAITH (the law makes us think that God must be more pleased with those He gave the law to). The very thing that makes us RIGHT is FAITH (the law condemns us, and rightly so). So, then, faith doesn't do away with law IT ACTUALLY ESTABLISHES EXACTLY WHAT THE LAW WAS FOR!!! Do you get it? Since God has performed His miraculous work in us humans NOT by anything we do or have done, then we can realize His whole purpose for having given the law ... since the law speaks of what we should do or not do. Faith speaks of what GOD has done through His Son Jesus ... and therefore, what He is even now doing through us.
Phew!! I hope this helps! Remember, this reality is IN you. You don't get it because you're so smart ... but because His Spirit is in you and He is working to open your eyes to see the power that works in you. What is that power? It is the very same that raised Jesus from the dead!!!! Yikes!!! That's the power of God!!! :)

You will be one of those called least in the kingdom of heaven.?
17"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. 19Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.
You have sadly been ill taught on the differences between legalism and law-keeping. You mistake the different versions of righteousness that the bible talks about, and know not the meaning of
matthew 7 1"(R)Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter.
22"(S)Many will say to Me on (T)that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?'
23"And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; (U)DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.'
You are meant to learn the commands of moses, though nothing YOU do will better your image in Gods eyes. Read psalm 91 for proper heart on matter! Keeping the law close to your heart is not the PERFORMANCE OF IT. It is treasuring his words - His commands. It is your desire and diligence of meditating on those commands forefront on your mind and heart that allows God to DO and WILL WITHIN YOU! That is how you establish the Law. You die, because it is no longer your will or deed, but only trust/faith. And is it even YOUR FAITH?! It is faith that starts as small as a mustard seed, but that seed is not of you! Certainly not! That you may not boast. Why do you study the scriptures? Are not all the scriptures inspired, and wasn't Paul speaking of the 'old testament'?! Are we not told to go to the synagogue to hear the law of moses? Acts 15:19-21 (we don't need to go anymore - we have inexpensive bibles to read ourselves.)
You are saying that God gave all those commands and then changed his mind? After Jesus kept them all, and said walk in my footsteps, be perfect as I am perfect (mind He asked the Father to be in us as He (the Father) was in Jesus).
There is no way to fit in the scriptures to give you proper instruction to this. I had some free time just now, and ran across this page. Sorry if you get upset. As far as a proper study of scripture as a whole, and correct understanding of the law, and a believers response to it, go to [Link removed. Jim]
There are no right answers to the wrong questions. Quite simply, there is a stronghold that is quite ancient that keeps christians from knowing God better. check out the site, and you will soon see.
Love is the fulfilling of the law
Hello, dear visitor,
I sincerely believe you misunderstand the working of God in us through the Spirit apart from the law. The Spirit of God in us is the simple difference between the old covenant and the new covenant. For the Spirit IS the law that has been written on our hearts. It's only your perception that such a move suggests a changing of God's mind, for this very truth was foretold way before Christ came. The goodness of God testified to in the law given to Moses has been poured out in our hearts through God's spirit, and yes, it is through faith that this is revealed in us.

By the way, your posting of this comment does not upset me. I removed the link in your post, as I am not interested in promoting your site. Of course, I can put the link back if you'd put my link on your site. :)

True Humility..ours in Him
Very much a living response Jim.
Faith established the Law
Jim,
It was so good to read your piece about how faith actually establishes the Law. So gospel-right-on!

Hello Nechi, it seems that you might be pinning your hopes upon your own faithfulness. Is that how you see it?
Jim
quoting verse!
I see him quoting Bible verses. How do you see it?! Or are you presuming, or assuming something else? What does the bible say about being presumptuous? I'm sorry if I am being so too but, I don't understand how you came up with him "pinning his hopes on his faithfulness"? Hopes? Is that what quoting scripture is to you?
I'm trying very hard to not judge here. Just very curious to what you're trying to say. Also, you include explanations, (I'm referring to previous comments you've made), some without scripture identification, and I'm finding it difficult to understand you. I am getting older but, I'm also fairly well educated. Maybe my mind isn't what it use to be, but I sure am curious to what your message is.
Sincerely,
Alan
Hello Alan, thanks for
Hello Alan, thanks for writing.
My responses are based upon what I hear, and all too often I hear something other than what the verse(s) might be actually saying. As you’ve been around long enough, I’m sure you’ve realized that people don’t always agree with or even really know some of the things they quote. Concerning Nechi’s post, the collection of verses combined with the added comments suggested something to me that I wanted to follow up on. And so I did. But I got no response. I might have my suspicions as to what he might have been saying, but with no follow up, that’s all it is.
As to my message, it should be obvious. For it is stated everywhere. Jesus Christ, the one who has died and been raised, has become our everything.
Jim
