God did not damn Jesus Christ
Submitted by theshovelBased upon my Shoveletter, The Foolishness of God, I received the following objection:
Jim, God did NOT Damn Christ. He damned Sin. God can't deny Himself. Pastor Leo
Hello Leo! I'm familiar with the doctrinal distinction you refer to and would have probably said something very similar a number of years ago. I do not disagree with your statement about God damning sin, for this is true. However, God had judged - condemned - or damned - sin by judging, condemning, or damning Christ on our behalf. Consider:
Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us--for it is written, 'CURSED IS EVERYONE WHO HANGS ON A TREE' Galatians 3:10
For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, Romans 8:3
He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. 2 Corinthians 5:21
Also, consider the statement I made in the Shoveletter:
The only message understood by those who are perishing is that God damned his own son
Those who are perishing stood by as representatives of the judgment seat of God. As the judges of Jesus they declared him to be condemned (damned) by God and by themselves.
Jim
