The Flesh
Some things can ONLY be defined - or understood - in terms of what they are NOT. Such is the case regarding the Biblical usage of the flesh. Theologians and Bible teachers have attempted to determine its meaning for centuries, yet the confusion continues as to any real understanding. In his use of the phrase, the flesh, Paul referred to the emptiness of the shell of humanity, not that the actual flesh, skin, blood and bones were evil in themselves. I say we can hear more if we listen not for a meaning but for a lack of one. That lack represents the emptiness of the whole history of mankind as it has sought to fill the void with anything except the only reality that can fill it.
