Wasting time with childish thinking?

When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things. 1 Corinthians 13:11

I suspect that most of you learned this verse according to the very reasoning Paul claimed to have done away with. What I'm saying is that the childish reasoning he referred to had nothing to do with what many regard as baby Christian speaking and thinking, for there is no such thing. I'll bet that caught some of you off guard, eh? For the picture he presented didn't refer to the difference between immature Christians and mature Christians, rather it highlights the difference between the reasoning of the natural mind and the mind of Christ. Of course, we're all familiar with the reasoning of the fleshly mind, but when are we going to stop owning it? For we passed from this childish reasoning when we received the Spirit of truth in Christ.

Believe me, I understand why it seems to make sense to view ourselves as if we started out as baby Christians who need to mature into responsible grown-up Christians, for that is exactly what we learned according to the reasoning of this world. But don't you understand how this thinking plays into the whole concept of knowledge-based Christianity? I mean, why else do you think this whole issue confuses us so much? What if the massive extent of available Christian teaching is the cause of most of our confusion?

I speak to you who have the mind of Christ ... ask HIM to take the blinders of fleshly reason away so that you may recognize the truth from the lie. I'm telling you, though, to be prepared for a shaking that will have you reeling with the extent of the revelation.

I love how you put that…stop ‘owning’ it. So well put friend. Isn’t it so true that we were all ‘managed’ by the church into thinking that our existence was according to levels? [just like you’ve said it here] What a persuasive argument they pose eh? Love the freedom you speak of dear brother, it so long over due for the children of God.

You wrote: “But don’t you understand how this thinking plays into the whole concept of knowledge-based Christianity? I mean, why else do you think this whole issue confuses us so much? You have just summarized how we got to the fractured, partisan, arrogant, judgmental place we see “representing” Christ today.

What a representation, eh? It's really no different with Christianity today than how Paul described self-righteous religion with an OT quote: "For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of YOU." Not that the "Gentiles" don't have a problem with God anyhow, but our modern-day Christian world keeps giving the world more and more ammunition by which to scoff.

Hey Jim Here is a thought. 1 Corinthians 3:1 And I brethern could not speak to you as to spritural men but as to men of flesh as to infants in Christ.2 I gave you milk to drink not solid food for you were not able to recieve it. Indeed even now you are not able. I can also see why we would think that there are babies and those who are not babies. As Paul says here many were as you stated still carnal or fleshly in thier thinking. There are many who in their thinking they are like children as children they believe they are already grown and know all but like children they form groups and make all leave who dont conform to their group. Like most churches. Paul calls those who think like mere men infants. I believe this is more of a picture of something to help us see where some are coming from. There are many who have been in the way so to speak for years and they still think like natural men or as Paul states babes in Christ. So many think that the truths they have learned in church make them mature or grown up. The truth is if we are still acting like mere men by setting up boundries and dare all to cross them or we will do God a favor and kick them out we are still thinking like mere men or children. God is not in the business of kicking any body out of any thing. God is in the drawing all men to himself in Christ business. This does not happen whem grown men act like children. I drove a school bus for 19 years and that was to be part of my learning to prepare for ministry many go to bible school and I did that to didnt amount to much. The true test was to take care of other peoples children for more years then I would have thought I needed. We can learn a whole lot about people in general by watching children and how they interact with one another. We can learn a whole lot about the parents of said children also. It is always funny to me how so may take Jesus command to become like a child to enter the kingdom and throw it at you like all children are so wondreful. I have seen inconence in many children and child like faith we can all draw pictures from. I have also seen some of the most cruel things I have ever seen come from the mouth and the actions of children. I believe we are seeing it in many ways as of late in the news and in many of our own lives. Much of what children do and say come from the mouths of those around them. And many adults who still act like children and they are physcily grown. To many of these are in the pulpits of the churches most have grown up in. Any way just some thoughts on the subject.

And some excellent thoughts, they are, my friend! Thanks for this. :)

When the Apostles recognized their own souls prospering, it wasn’t through means of the fleshly minds cover up job. Christ the life indeed causes ones soul to prosper but, how many times have we seen the exact opposite going on in our souls? Terrible torment of soul comes from that of the thing that is earthly not from above.

“…the picture he presented didn’t refer to the difference between immature Christians and mature Christians, rather it highlights the difference between the reasoning of the natural mind and the mind of Christ.” <~jim i LOVE that distinction!!  :) and thank you dave l. for putting in this verse: 1 Corinthians 3:1 ~ “And I brethern could not speak to you as to spiritual men but as to men of flesh as to infants in Christ. 2 I gave you milk to drink not solid food for you were not able to recieve it. Indeed even now you are not able.” as far as our relationship with GOD and one another in Christ, the reasoning of the natural mind of the flesh is as useless to us as acting like babies with one another, envying and wanting what the other has and trying to take away from one another, etc. total self-absorption and utter selfishness. we have not so learned Christ. this is how paul described how the Corinthians were acting or behaving amongst one another: 1Cor.1:10- And I call upon you, brethren, through the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that the same thing ye may all say, and there may not be divisions among you, and ye may be perfected in the same mind, and in the same judgement, 1:11- for it was signified to me concerning you, my brethren, by those of Chloe, that contentions are among you; … paul was great about expressing distinctions, wasn’t he.  :) the Corinthian Believers’ tendency to reason with the natural mind’s foolishness of the world led to them behaving amongst themselves with one another as being very much like mere infants and children, vying for the attentions of their self-appointed leaders like puppies crawling all over one another to get to their mommy’s milk source. this is nothing new with the natural mind. however, we do not desire to merely appeal to one another’s natural mind. we are a NEW CREATION in Christ and have the mind of christ to distinguish the difference between the two minds - diametrically opposed to one another.  :) i am so thankful to have access to this site that is so supportive of the distinction between the natural mind and the mind of Christ.  :) thank you dear shovel and all who are so supportive of this miraculous Life we have in Christ Himself. :)

‘For we passed from this childish reasoning when we received the Spirit of truth in Christ.’

I think the lack of the ‘how-to’ mind of neatly prescribed courses of actions is what is really terrifying. The natural mind is obsessed with prerequisites to fulfillment. Whereas this mind is fulfillment.

Yes, the natural mind is definitely obsessed with prerequisites to fulfillment. It cannot tolerate others gaining something without going through whatever process it went through.

    Jim

    Ah yes, the comparison realm.
