Common Knowledge

During a recent conversation, a dear brother recalled a memorable line from the Sci-Fi movie K-PAX (one of my favorites). After having baffled a few leading scientists with some detailed information that filled in the anomalies they hadn't been able to explain, the main character (who claimed to have come from the planet, K-PAX) was asked how he could possibly know things they were just beginning to explore. He responded, "It's common knowledge on my planet." Despite the compelling evidence, they just couldn't believe his story.

There was another man who claimed to have come from another place. He also baffled those who were of this world.

Nicodemus said to Him, “How can these things be?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you the teacher of Israel and do not understand these things? “Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know and testify of what we have seen, and you do not accept our testimony. “If I told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?  John 3:9-12

I wonder how many Christians might verbally agree with the above stated reality spoken by Jesus and yet still remain in ignorance as to its far-reaching ramifications. Do we suppose this truth was meant to remain isolated so that it would only describe Jesus himself? Have we not realized that the Son of God came to bring this same reality to those who have been made alive in him? Consider how he alluded to what was to come when he would give his life.

“Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit."  John 12:24

What I'm suggesting is that you who have been raised up with Jesus have also been made in the likeness of the one who is not of this world. You have been given a new life, with a new mind. A mind that cannot be understood by those of this world. That means that the wisdom within you — the wisdom that is common knowledge in the new world we come from — it baffles the world. Maybe we should stop trying to explain it ... and simply testify to it.

You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world. They are from the world; therefore they speak as from the world, and the world listens to them. We are from God; he who knows God listens to us; he who is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.  1 John 4:4-6

I must admit this is the one clip I listened to the entire way through. Riveting.

From the audio, Obedience, part 7:

Somehow, believers have been deceived into tripping all over the details of the religious mind so that they have difficulty recognizing the most profound simplicity of what it is to have been made freed from sin in Christ, as well as having been enslaved to God. And do not let the fact slip your consideration that our having been made obedient is just as certain as our having been made free from sin and made alive to God.

Why not give it a listen? :)
