Do we need to balance 1 John 2:27?

Regarding my last Spoonful, Taught By God, I received an excellent response suggesting that 1 John 2:27 needs to be balanced because of conflicts between what some claim to have received from God and what the Bible actually teaches. Years ago, I would have said the very same thing. I suspect that somewhere along the way most of you have also wondered where to draw the line. I mean, what do you do when someone tells you that God gave them “a word”, especially a word regarding some specific in your life? Do you simply accept it as God’s command for you or do you first verify it by the written word? Are we doubters to question what comes to us in such a direct fashion or are we gullible fools to accept without first testing? After all, we could find Bible verses to support either accusation, couldn’t we? But what if we are overlooking the obvious? I suggest that our attempts to balance pull us away from simplicity and into confusion.

I know, I have often suggested an overlooking of the obvious, and I’ve had some tell me that it’s not very obvious to them. So, I’ll explain what I mean by obvious after another look at the verse in question:

And as for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him. 1 John 2:27

John wrote these things because some had been promoting themselves as mediators between God and the people. However, Christ had done away with any need for a go-between — which is the system of Law with its hierarchy of prophets and teachers designed as the direct link to God. If you wanted to know what God wanted you to do, you had to access the authoritative system, which in turn would inquire of God on your behalf. That system has been done away in Christ.

So when people use this verse to establish themselves as authoritative links between God and you, they have promoted themselves just like the deceivers John warned against with the very words they now quote. Why should we even concern ourselves with whether or not the words of a mediator-wannabe line up with Scripture? The attempt to validate such claims by comparing them with what the Bible says only pulls us into the trap of legalism. After all, those who wrote the words we use to test such claims would tell us not to not go down that road.

If you’d like to read the original correspondence from which this was condensed, I posted and sent it out as a Shoveletter

Thank you for mentioning “legalism”. I think legalisn is at the base of problems in the church today.

Thanks for commenting! :) Yes, legalism flourishes in contemporary Christianity. I may not throw the word "legalism" around very often, but I can tell you that I describe the symptom many times using different words or phrases. Living according to the Law, living in bondage, living according to rules, principles or laws, etc. It's all the same. We did not learn Christ in this way, for he has made us new creations in him, raised from the dead, freed from the law of sin and death! :)

Jim

Hey Jim, If I’ve quoted that verse once I’ve quoted it a million times. The slickest way to get someone to do what you want them to do is to say; “I’ve got a word for you from the Lord.” That may very well be true but I’ll be hanged if I’m going to take someone’s word for it. The absolute fact that you have the anointing, or the Holy Spirit, within your deepest innermost being is the very reason Jesus says; “Know the truth and the truth shall make you free.” We are totally free from the world and all it’s feeble limitations as we are totally consumed in God through Christ Who is the Door. (John 10:9) We have been made one with the Living God through Christ, it is a done deal. It is the flesh that constantly lies to us, deceiving us into thinking that we are separate. When Jesus said; “It is finished!” He meant what He said. If we are so gullible as to just believe anything we are told we will forever be blown by every stinking breath of hot air that proceeds forth from the mouths of man. Our Rock, our stability, our foundation, our truth and our All is God through Christ and that, as they say, is that. Thus says the Lord, “Cursed is the man who trusts in mankind and makes flesh his strength, and whose heart turns from the Lord. For he will be like a bush in the desert and will not see when good comes, but will live in stony wastes in the wilderness, a land of salt without inhabitant. Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord and whose trust IS the Lord. For he will be like a tree planted by the water, that extends it’s roots by a stream and will not fear when the heat comes; but it’s leaves will be green, and it will not anxious in a year of drought nor cease to yield fruit.” Jeremiah 17:5-8 God Almighty said it then and He still says it today. God is unchanging, however there are many who will tell you that He has. Just flip through the channels of your television or sit on a pew and you will hear such deception and outright lies you will not know up from down or right from left. And He said; “See to it that you not be misled; for many will come in My name, saying, “I am He,’ and ?The time is at hand’; do not go after them.” Luke 21:8 Many have not come saying that they are the Christ, but there have been thousands upon thousands who have said; “Yes Jesus is the Messiah’ and ?Yes Jesus is Lord”, and have preached and taught in His name and have deceived, and are deceiving, millions of christians for the simple reason that we have trusted in man and been led astray by the filth of his lips. But don’t believe a word I write. Go straight to the Source Who is your life. If we can’t depend on God for everything, we can’t depend on Him for anything. After all…who am I? One in Christ Jesus, Michael
