The Shame Destroyer

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. Romans 1:16

Back in my Bible College days, I memorized these verses as an aid to my newly-acquired soul-winning endeavors. At first, I dreaded approaching strangers with "God's plan of salvation". Even more so, people I knew. Believe me, I needed the encouragement to "keep on keeping on", and I slowly did get more accustomed to witnessing. Every so often, I wondered if the supposed shame I struggled against might not be more closely related to the overwhelming panic I experienced at any kind of public speaking, even one-on-one confrontations like asking the boss for a raise. After all, Paul did not suggest that his lack of shame related to the fear of approaching people with a message, but rather with the message itself. I also had to consider the fact that his statement did not specifically refer to preaching to unbelievers, for this message was directed to the believers in Rome. That didn't make much sense to me, but I've come to realize that we pretty much ignore what doesn't make sense.

So then, what other possible shame could Paul have referred to? What does the gospel declare that might give a believer cause to feel shame? And no, it is not sin.

For consider your calling, brethren, that there were not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble; but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong, and the base things of the world and the despised God has chosen, the things that are not, so that He may nullify the things that are, so that no man may boast before God. 1 Corinthians 1:26-29

You see, believers don't often come from the ranks of the world's wise, mighty or noble, but from that which is rated as foolish, weak, base ... even from among those who are considered the nothings of the world. But where there is cause for shame in the world, God has removed it in Christ.

But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption 1 Corinthians 1:30

Ironically, I have come to realize that I actually dreaded public speaking for the same reason I might find shame in the gospel: exposure as being deficient. After all, why would it surprise me that the salvation of the gospel impacts the exact same basis of fear that paralyzed me in the world? Of course in the world, I have the ability to improve my temporary standing by playing the game. In other words, I can get better. However, by declaring my real value in Christ, I can only make myself appear more deficient to the judges of this world. All things considered, I am not ashamed of the gospel.

"However, by declaring my real value in Christ, I can only make myself appear more deficient to the judges of this world."
That kinda sucks if you are in to impressing the world, which sadly, at times, I am!! LOL!! But the shame is removed in Christ....sweet!!

Paul said that ‘..we glory in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces..hope’ I used to attempt not to fear, not to feel ashamed and guilty. But soon enough I found that the experiences of fear and shame themselves revealed that within me that overcomes them, severing me from them. So that now I welcome these experiences, and indeed death itself.

We SO want to attempt as you say, to get out of this through fleshly means and we end up stirring it up at the same time! lol [what a mess]

For even the world has caught on to the idea of  avoiding “guilt trips” and condemning people in order to keep things going  smoothly in their lives. While I am not saying that this is wrong, what I am saying is that there is true power in waiting on Him [put your hope in the Lord]in the midst of such turmoil. For there lies true freedom and not just another energetic fleshly tactic that stops as soon as you get tired. [That needs to shoot down others to save itself]I should also say that I am not condoning a state of depression either. I can no more tell you how it will go with you and God in these things anymore than I can tell you “when” or “if” you will win the lotto. I think we gain confidence as we go through it and God shows to be victorious again and again.

Again, great word!

Adam

‘I can no more tell you how it will go with you and God in these things anymore than I can tell you “when” or “if” you will win the lotto. ’ Aye, we may often forget that we are dealing with and coming to know the richness of the creativity of God in the midst of the shallowness and repetitiveness of fleshly life. It breaks the linear mind of neatly figured out systems apart. -georgi

The ones I love most are the ones that are most easily offended when I speak to them honestly. By appearance I am nothing spectacular and it is this that is by them alluded to as the justification for not listening to me, since not being successful is considered the same as not being truthful. But I have come to find comfort in their rejection, for in the humiliation is embedded the revelation of something glorious - georgi

Paul said : “God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are,.”

Georgi, though it can be said that a few  that are of prominent status have been given life in Christ, not many have. Even if they have, they may often struggle with the things that come so easily for YOU. For does a prominent man have far to fall?[yes!] How about a base man?[no!]

You have been sharing some real gold here at the Shovel. I hope you will continue sharing your heart.

Thanks so much,

Adam

EXCELLENT word Visitor!!!!

Adam

I have found so far that it never fails, this sustaining hope that comes in the midst of what to the flesh is hopelessness. If tribulations are certain, then this revelation of hope of life is far more certain. So that we can say “..Behold, God is mine helper, the Lord keeps me alive” (Psalms 54:4); and again “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1). - georgi

Our problem is that we are so easily made to feel unworthy, and therefore, ashamed to stand before him source
