Union, Unity, Made One
In that day you shall know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you … Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one.John 14:20; 17:11
We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord,
We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord,
And we pray that our unity may one day be restored,
And they’ll know we are Christians by our love.
I remember singing these words of unity and oneness countless times back in the seventies during the Jesus Movement. However, this expression of unity was primarily a plea for an end of hostilities between Christian denominations. The idea that Jesus Christ had established a miraculous union or joining between God and ourselves never entered our prayers or rap sessions. But what if the truth of unity or union in Christ goes beyond a mere unity of purpose, meeting place, or doctrinal agreement? What if this is what being a Christian was all about?
