From my past training I used to write this off from the simple standpoint of "doctrines of demons", but I think we were trying too hard to find a "scriptural" reason to counter the error we saw. I don't necessarily disagree with all that I learned about this, but there's something else behind it, that also drove US to seek the things we went after.
I think we get so desperate for life that we will seek for that extra-special something that will make us "closer" to God. Within every group there will appear many such offerings. Going beyond your quota of good deeds, giving more than expected, Bible reading, prayer, witnessing, Bible memorization, etc. Striving to receive the gift of "tongues" definitely fits into this category because it's a quick and easy solution. Oh, sure, we can present a few Bible verses to support the view (the out-of-context factor is almost a given), but the thing that drives this insanity is a basic dissatisfaction in the relationship between us and God.
