Testing new search feature

I decided to try out a new search module on theshovel.net because the native search feature seems less than hoped for. I'd like you to help me test it. I will be adding and subtracting things, as well as moving them around. I have a 30-day free trial before I have to make my final decision, so I'd appreciate some feedback (which can be left in the comments in this entry). Please let me know what you think. :)

Thanks, Jim

Re: Testing new search feature

Sorry but I wasn't able to tell a big difference-(probably showing how unobservant I am.) I'll keep trying it out. Perhaps unrelated, I use the search feature more on the "shovel forum" and have found I can't find phrases or anything in quotes very well. It finds each word individually. Maybe I am doing something wrong? Will you be using the the new search module on the shovel forum or are you happy with that one?

Re: Testing new search feature

Hi Debi,

Thanks for your input. Let me know if you notice anything as you keep using it. :)

Yes, I understand the difficulty of searching on the Shovel Shack forum, especially on long threads that span a few pages. It only gives you the main link and you have to go through each page to find it. When searching there, are you selecting the button that gives the option of "phrase"? If so, don't enclose your phrase with quotes.

The new search I'm using on theshovel won't work with the Shack, it's of a different format altogether. I've been planning on switching the Shack over to the same system eventually, but for now I can't get to it.

Thanks, Jim :)

Re: Testing new search feature

I believe I like it better. I like the left column that automatically displays the other ways to search... more readily available. I believe with your original search I had to click on a drop-down tab to see the list... I think. You, as the web site creator, and of course, more intimately involved with the details what advantages/disadvantages do you see?

Re: Testing new search feature

Hello Nergo! :)

Regarding spell check, and I can see you sorely need it — LOL!, you can use whatever spell check program you already have available on your computer. You just have to set it up in your browser. In the Firefox browser, for example, you go to Tools (or Edit) > Preferences > Advanced, and then choose the option to check spelling as you type. Other browsers will have similar options.

This search uses an outside server engine, which for one thing makes it faster. It also allows for stem searching, as in a word like "believe" will find believing, believed, believer, etc. There are numerous more features, as you can see with the other filtering options that allow you to refine your search. It's just so much more organized and customizable, and I just turned it on this morning.
